The Largest Freshwater Aquarium System in Europe

Beneath the ground, on levels -1 and -2 of the main building, lies a spectacular system of aquariums with a total capacity of nearly one million liters. It is divided into several sections, home to carp, pike, perch, catfish, bream, dwarf catfish, grass carp, and their companions.

The excellently designed decorations recreate the true underwater scenery of streams, rivers, and lakes, giving visitors the impression that they are truly walking beneath the water.

Ship – Common Sturgeon

A species of fish from the sturgeon family. In the Danube, it forms a non-migratory freshwater form, spawning in the Váh, Tisza, and Mureș rivers. It reaches a length of 1–1.5 m (maximum 2 m) and a weight of about 10 kg (up to 80 kg). Its body is thick, short, and stocky. A distinctive feature that sets it apart from other sturgeons is the lower lip, which in this species is not divided.

Adder (Common European Viper)

A species of venomous snake from the viper family. On its back, it has a darker zigzag pattern compared to its base color, known as the Cain’s band. The zigzag is not always clearly visible.
The venom of the common viper damages the nervous system, causes tissue necrosis, reduces blood clotting, and disturbs the heart rhythm, making a bite particularly dangerous for children and the elderly.

European Otter

A species of semi-aquatic predatory mammal from the weasel family. It is found across almost all of Europe and is closely associated with aquatic habitats. It leads a solitary lifestyle and is an excellent swimmer. Its main diet consists of fish, supplemented by rodents, as well as water and marsh birds.

Grass Carp

A species of fish from the carp family. It inhabits lowland rivers and lakes, living in groups ranging from a few to several individuals. It grows up to 150 cm in length and reaches a body weight of up to 45 kg.

Prussian Carp

A species of freshwater fish from the carp family, also known as the Japanese carp or japoƄczyk.
Originally from China, it has been introduced into Central and Eastern Europe, Siberia, and the Black Sea basin.

Wels Catfish

Also called the European catfish – a species of fish from the catfish family. It occurs in the basins of the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea, and extends westward as far as Spain.
It is the second largest fish in Europe after the beluga sturgeon, and the largest freshwater fish in Europe. It can reach a length of 3 m and a body weight of over 100 kg.

Noble Crayfish

Also known as the river crayfish – a species of freshwater crustacean from the order of decapods. Sometimes referred to as a barometer of water purity, as it is a bioindicator of clean waters.
Crayfish, especially the noble crayfish, have been eaten in continental Europe since the Middle Ages. Today the species is classified as vulnerable, with populations showing a declining trend.
Throughout Europe, reintroductions are a common method of protecting noble crayfish populations.

European Pond Turtle

The only species of turtle naturally inhabiting the Tisza river. It can live for several decades. It is a lowland species, with water as its primary habitat, which it leaves only when females lay eggs. It inhabits small, overgrown ponds, forest pools, marshes, dense and inaccessible oxbow lakes, large ponds, as well as slow-flowing streams with thick vegetation.
