There is, however, a small issue with this town. The name Foros—which in Greek means “lighthouse”—suggests an ancient origin. Yet, you should not expect to find any ancient relics in Foros. Apart from a few 19th-century estates, well hidden from the eyes of the proletariat, where the Russian elites used to and still do spend their holidays, as well as the Church of the Resurrection, there are virtually no historic monuments in Foros. The town is entirely modern.
It is quite possible that we are dealing here with a typical Russian manipulation: an attempt to provide a historical justification for territorial acquisitions—in this case, reclaiming Crimea, once taken from the Turks, for Orthodoxy.
The tourist appeal of Foros, however, is determined not by history but by nature. The town is beautifully situated and has rocky beaches, ideal for diving, though less convenient for sunbathers. It is not very comfortable to lie on stones if all you have is a towel...
It is mainly known for its climate, beautiful beaches, and the historic palace of Prince Kuznetsov.
