Budapest and its surroundings do not formally belong to any of Hungary’s four traditional regions (Dunántúl, Alföld, Northern Hungary, or the Danube Bend), although they are geographically and culturally linked to them. From the perspective of Hungary’s spatial organization, this area is often referred to as the Capital Region – encompassing Budapest and the surrounding counties.
The region lies on both sides of the Danube, at the junction of Transdanubia and the Great Hungarian Plain.
It includes:
- Budapest (a separate administrative unit, divided into 23 districts),
- and Pest County – with smaller towns surrounding the capital, such as Szentendre, Vác, GödöllĆ, Cegléd, Ráckeve, and Érd.
