Northern Hungary (Észak-Magyarország) is one of the country’s most fascinating regions in terms of nature, culture, and history. Here you’ll find a unique blend of mountains, castles, wines, and hot springs. It’s a region slightly harsher than the rest of Hungary, yet more mysterious and atmospheric.

Located in the northeastern part of the country, along the Slovakian border, the landscape is dominated by mountains and highlands – including Hungary’s highest range, the Mátra, as well as the Bükk and Zemplén Mountains.

In the Middle Ages, it was an important center for defense and mining – with castles in Eger, DiósgyƑr, and Füzér.

The region has strong Catholic traditions – Eger is an important bishopric. It’s also tied to the anti-Habsburg rebellion led by Rákóczi and later national movements.

Wine and Gastronomy

  • Tokaj – the legendary Tokaji wine (“the king of wines and the wine of kings”), made from Furmint and HárslevelƱ grape varieties.
  • Eger – known for Egri Bikavér (“Bull’s Blood”), a blend of local red grapes.
  • Countless wine cellars carved into volcanic tuff.
  • The cuisine is heartier and more rustic than elsewhere in Hungary – featuring fish soups, game meats, and cabbage dishes.

Spas and Thermal Baths

  • Miskolctapolca – a unique cave bath in karst caverns, one of the most unusual in Europe.
  • Egerszalók – thermal baths with a natural salt terrace (resembling Pamukkale in Turkey).
  • Zsóry FürdƑ – a well-known spa in MezƑkövesd.
  • Bogács, Demjén, ParádfürdƑ – smaller but charming spa towns.

This region is perfect for combining active recreation with relaxation and wine tasting – all set against the backdrop of castles, soulful towns, and fragrant forests.
