A historic Benedictine monastery located south of Kraków's city center, in the Dębniki district.
The monastery was founded in the 11th century and has since remained an important place of religious worship and a center of Benedictine life in Poland.
A Benedictine community lives and works in the Tyniec Monastery, dedicating itself to prayer, study, and pastoral work. The monastery is also open to tourists and visitors, who can explore many valuable historical sites such as the Church of St. Benedict, the treasury, a library containing manuscripts and incunabula, and a museum.
The Church of St. Benedict within the Tyniec Monastery is one of Kraków’s most significant historical monuments. Built in the Baroque style in the 17th century, its interior features many beautiful works of art, including frescoes and sculptures.
The Tyniec Monastery is also known for its production of wine, liqueurs, and other products, which can be purchased at a shop run by the Benedictine monks.
Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec
Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Tyniec
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Tyniec is a lesser-known but interesting church located near the famous Benedictine Abbey. While the Benedictine monastery in Tyniec is best known for the Baroque Church of St. Benedict, the former parish of Tyniec also included a church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul.
Today, the main church in Tyniec is the monastic Church of St. Benedict, which, following the dissolution of the monastery in the 19th century, also took on parish functions. If a separate Church of Saints Peter and Paul did exist, it was eventually dismantled, absorbed by surrounding development, or simply fell into ruin.
